Three new photo exhibitions open this month, all focusing on different aspects of island social history, illustrated in black and white stills from the past. Including insights into how the Fiesta de San Gines in Arrecife was celebrated during the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s, an event that is also being staged to mark the current celebrations of the Fiesta de San Gines in the capital.

The San Gines photo exhibition has been organized by the Sociedad La Democracia in conjunction with the Ayuntamiento de Arrecife and Memoria Digital, a government body dedicated to creating a store of images from Lanzarote’s past, who to date they have accrued an incredible collection of over 7,000 images as well as old video footage

The San Gines exhibition features over 50 photos depicting various scenes of celebration, including stills taken from the galas and dances that form such an integral part of the annual Fiesta de San Gines, all set against various city backdrops that in many instances have changed dramatically since the images were first captured. The Sociedad de Democracia is located in Avenida Doctor Ruperto Gonzales Negrin in Arrecife and admission is free of charge.

Elsewhere on the island visitors can also explore a series of images providing a photographic history of both the village of Mozaga and San Bartolomé. The former event is being held at the Centro Sociocultural de Mozaga and traces the evolution and development of a number of local families. Whilst Retratos III : Historic Photography fulfils a similar role at the Municipal Theatre in San Bartolomé and is open from 08.00 to 14.30 Monday to Friday with admission again free of charge.
