700 Swimmers Expected For the Travesia El Rio

If you’re visiting the Mirador del Rio or other high points in the north of the island this weekend, you’ll be able to see the annual swim taking place between Lanzarote and the neighbouring island of La Graciosa. Known as the Travesia el Rio The swim takes place on Saturday 6th October, starting at 13.30 and has some 700 odd participants, who will be setting off from the beach of Playa del Baja Risco, at the foot of the Famara massif below the Mirador.

The distance between the two islands is approximately 2,600 metres, depending on the tide. This annual event celebrates its twentieth edition this year and always takes place at the end of September or in early October to ensure that conditions are as benign as possible. A strong current runs through ‘El Rio’, as this stretch of water is known, so it is held in the early Autumn to take advantage of the less windy weather that prevails at this time of the year.

Organised in 1993 by a swimming club from Las Palmas, Club Victoria, the event has continued year after year, with the number of people taking part increasing annually as well. Subscription for the event has already closed but it is open to residents and visitors alike and participants can register on-line. Its popularity is such that in recent years there is usually a waiting list for those who wish to take part.
