BIG PICTURE Lanzarote Hosts European Cine Festival

Lanzarote plays host to the 5th edition of the Muestra de Cine Europea from November 24th to December 4th. Which boasts a packed schedule of screenings in some of the island’s most iconic locations, such as the Jameos del Agua and the Museum of International and Contemporary Art, as well as local cinemas such as the Multicines Atlantida in Arrecife.

The project is designed to establish Lanzarote as a platform for high quality, contemporary film making and ties in neatly with the Canary Island governments plans to attract more film production to the archipelago with generous tax breaks.

This year’s event includes numerous acclaimed works from around the world, including highly topical full length features such as Abbas Fahdel’s Homeland Year Zero, a documentary which explores life in post war Iraq and Mediterranea, a film directed by Jonas Carpigano which chronicles the journey of Ayiva, an economic refugee from Burkina Faso who seeks to create a new life in Italy.

Most of these films are enjoying their first airing in the Canaries and many are being screened with English subtitles. To view the full event programme visit the muestradecinelanzarote website.
