FIGHT THE POWER Manrique’s Eco Activism Exhibited In Arrecife

The proto-ecowarrior stance of Cesar Manrique is highlighted in a new exhibition opening tomorrow, April 30th, in Arrecife…..

Whose beach?  Our beach. Never mind Extinction Rebellion, Cesar Manrique, Lanzarote’s favourite son, was kicking sand in the faces of the powers the be here on Lanzarote way back in the 1970’s. Protesting against the commercialisation of the island and campaigning against the ecological impact of mass market tourism.

And as part of the ongoing celebrations to mark the anniversary of his birth in 1919 a new exhibition opens tomorrow at the Cesar Manrique Foundation’s outpost in Arrecife, the Sala Jose Saramago. Which focuses on the socio-political aspects of the artist’s contribution to the island and the debate on its development – encompassing some great protest photos, newspapers cuttings and other evocative ephemera.

Admission is free of charge and the Sala Jose Saramago is located in La Plazuela in Arrecife.
