Moscow Ballet Perform Swan Lake in Tias
The world renowned Moscow Ballet will be performing Swan Lake on 17th April at the Teatro de Tias. Swan Lake is one of the best known ballets and has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity since the film Black Swan was released last year.
The musical score was written by Piotr Tchaikovsky in 1875-6 and received its premiere at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow in 1877. The story centres around the princess Odette who is turned into a swan by the wicked sorcerer Rothbart. The ballerina who dances the role of Odette also plays the sorcerer´s daughter Odile, in her guise as the black swan.
Naturally, Prince Siegfried, the hero of the story, falls in love with Odette as she assumes her human form by the side of the lake. However, when dawn breaks, Odette once more becomes a swan. Siegfried promises to rescue Odette by choosing her as his bride at the Royal Ball.
Before he is able to do this, Rothbart takes his daughter Odile disguised as Odette to the ball and thus Siegfried plights his troth to the wrong woman. This ensures that Odette is unable to escape from Rothbart's clutches except through death. Odette and then Siegfried both throw themselves to their deaths and thus break the spell Rothbart has cast.
The artistic director of this production is Timur Fayziev, whilst the choreography has been designed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov.
This performance takes place on Sunday 17th April at the Tias theatre at 21.00. Tickets cost €35 and can be purchased from the Tourist Information Office in Puerto del Carmen, Luna Records, the Culture Department of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the Culture Department of the Ayuntamiento of Tias.
