Golf
Although Lanzarote has had a golf course for nearly 30 years, it has not been well known for the sport. With the newest course now two year's old, a number of new courses in the pipeline and an enviable year round climate, that is about to change.
General Information
The dry climate in Lanzarote does not naturally lend itself to the creation of lush green golf-courses.
This is a shame as the perfect year round weather would allow golf to be played at times when it is not possible elsewhere — at least not without some discomfort.
The advent of desalination plants, which produce abundant water straight from the Atlantic means that it is now, possible to produce the rich growth of grass needed for a top-class course.
This important fact, coupled to the desire of the Cabildo to take tourism much more up-market in Lanzarote, has allowed for additional golf courses to be planned and constructed.
Lanzarote Golf Resort - Puerto del Carmen
The long awaited Lanzarote Golf Resort opened a couple of years ago just outside Puerto del Carmen. The eighteen hole, 72 par course is 6,133 metres long and was designed by the well-known American golf course designer, Ron Kirby.
Its location on the hills overlooking Puerto del Carmen gives it the incredible backdrop of the Atlantic ocean and the course itself is planted with numerous mature palm trees and other indigenous plants. Mindful of the environmental impact, the course has been sympathetically laid out to minimise its impact upon the surrounding countryside and incorporates an irrigation system that uses recycled water.
The friendly bi-lingual staff at the Golf Resort will be happy to assist anyone who wants to play a round of golf, from the absolute beginner to advanced golfers who want to improve their game. Buggies, electronic trolleys and clubs are all available to hire, whilst an experienced instructor is also on hand for those who wish to take lessons, including lessons for children. The superb climate of Lanzarote means that golfing is possible all year round.

New Lanzarote Golf Courses in Construction
Golf at Montaña Roja, Playa Blanca
A further course is at the very start of construction at the south of Lanzarote, in the resort of Playa Blanca.
This course will be on the edge of the resort close to the new development of Faro Park, which has large, luxurious villas to serve the golfer, as well as a number of top-class hotels, such as the Natura Palace.
Puerto Calero Golf
Although it is close to the new course at Puerto del Carmen, it is hoped that there are plans for a golf course to be built next to the luxury marina of Puerto Calero.
This may well be some way off, so for now you will need to visit the existing courses at Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen.
Existing Lanzarote Courses
Costa Teguise Golf Course
The first course on the island, Costa Teguise Golf was opened in 1978 and provides a splendid setting at the foot of an inactive volcano.
It is a championship course and offers a good standard of golf in a very pleasant environment.
Whether Costa Teguise will maintain it’s top slot when the other courses open for business, remains to be seen.
A Healthy Future
What is certain, is that the choice for the avid golfer who wants to play all year round, is only going to improve.
It has to be said, that the future of Golf in Lanzarote, looks quite healthy.
